Wangaratta is a long way from the sea but you can be transported there in your mind at our next concert – Symphony of the Seas with a broad theme of all kinds of water!

The Hebrides overture was written by Felix Mendelssohn after a trip to the tiny island of Staffa off Scotland’s rugged west coast. The music will help you hear the swell of the ocean and the echoing of the waves as they crash into the island cave and on the rocks.

The theme from Swan Lake evokes the beauty and grace of swans swimming.

Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, also known as the Pastoral symphony, written in 1808, captures the idea of water and movement, particularly in its second movement, subtitled “Scene by a Brook” where you will hear the babbling brook played by the lower strings underneath the main tune.

Mozart’s well known Horn Concerto gives our talented horn player, Bronwyn McGorlick, a chance to show her skill and love of her instrument.

Waltz along with the very popular Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss and sing along with the well-known Moon River by Henry Mancini. Then tap along with the traditional Sailors Hornpipe which gets faster and faster!

After interval Sarah Brindley, our principal violinist, will feature in the exciting presentation of Sherezade, by Rimsky-Korsakov, his well-known symphonic suite based on the story of “One Thousand and One Nights.”

A medley from Showboat will bring back memories of this old favourite.

We end with a beautiful symphony called the Moldau, composed in 1888 by Smetena, who brings the listener from the beginning of the river, along its banks, noticing a hunt in the forest, past a peasant wedding, and a dancing group, and then over rapids before finishing with the river meeting the sea.

We look forward to sharing this experience of water with you!
