To celebrate our 15th Birthday we introduce our Black Box Series, held over 10 consecutive days in June next door in Gallery 2.

The Black Box Series will compliment our theatre program providing a minimalist setting and blank canvas that allows directors, actors and designers to craft unique, intimate theatrical experiences. Its flexibility encourages a special connection between the performers and their audience.

Why travel to Chapel on Chapel or Gasworks in Melbourne when you’ll be able to walk 15 metres next door into an intimate theatre space where you can sit with a beverage in hand and experience thought provoking works with a modern edge, award winning fringe festival artists and celebrate diverse storytelling right here in Wangaratta?

The Series kicks off with No Former Performer Has Performed this Performance Before, a live ‘study’ into performance, risk and improvisation.

The play Marooned depicts four people who are marooned together in a waiting room in the afterlife.  The audience journeys with them as they each come back from the edge. But are they going home?

Winner of Best Comedy at Melbourne Fringe 2023 the hilarious new comedy Stickybeak is about the neighbours you know and love to hate! Every street needs a stickybeak.... or two!!

Tibetan Artist Tenzin Choegyal is a master of the bamboo flute and three-stringed lute but is best known for his extraordinary vocal ability. Tenzin will perform original compositions inspired by Buddhist texts and poetry.

Oyster Boy is a dark, absurd comedy for anyone who’s ever tried to fit in and instead found out, sometimes you just have to go and shuck yourself.  Oyster Boy lives inside an oyster. He is a big fishy weirdo just waiting to be shucked. But is the world ready for his nutrient rich, gender fluid, sand intolerant presence?

Garry Starr Greece Lightning features an overzealous idiot attempting to perform all of Greek Mythology in order to save his Hellenic homeland from economic ruin.

Perolas Quartet presents a blend of experimental jazz, evocative lyrics, and unconventional rhythms, resulting in a truly distinctive musical fusion. Anchored in the resonant tones of the harp, the quartet seamlessly weaves analog electronics into captivating compositions, crafting an original sonic landscape.

YouTube sensations The Mik Maks bring their family band to town with guaranteed giggling, singing and jiggling in the Mini Mak Mosh pit!

Youth Comedy Performance - providing opportunities for our local young people, one of Australia’s leading comedy writers, performers and producers, Anthony Lamond will spend the day with local students to develop comedy concepts, write a comedy routine, work on their delivery and then perform on stage that night!

We will also shine a spotlight on the creativity and sophistication of local VCE performing arts students with VCE Drama & Theatre Studies Monologues. Audiences will be able to enjoy performances by students for their 2023 or 2024 VCE performance examinations presenting inventive original works and interpretations of existing monologues.
