Steinway on Stage is series of intimate twilight concerts featuring Wangaratta’s magnificent Steinway Grand Piano. Audiences gather around it on the stage of the Alpine MDF Theatre.

Mark, Nina and Nicholas have known each other for more than 20 years, following their music studies at La Trobe University. Recently, gathered at Nina’s piano, they revisited some of their favourite songs, which will feature in this recital. They include works by Faure and Brahms, also showcased will be early 20th century English song - favourites of Nina, inherited from her parents.

Mark Kerr was, in his earlier years, a piano student of Mark Jost and Stephen McIntyre. He did post-graduate studies in Vienna and Moscow after piano studies with Keith Humble at La Trobe University. He is a composer and a senior teacher at Camberwell Grammar School, where he directs the VCE Performance subjects and has established an elite chorale for boys in Years 6 to 12. He has developed challenging composition studies in the senior school.

Nina Hanna has a long musical association with this region, going back to her childhood in the Cobram/Numurkah area, where her parents were leaders of what was then a vibrant local music scene. Nina has sung with the Melbourne Chorale Chamber Singers and Astra Chamber Choir. Since moving to Wangaratta, she has been an active member of Vocal Dimension. During the 80s and 90s she was a semi-professional singer, performing at weddings and various social gatherings. At this time she was also collaborating with Mark and Nicholas in recitals at La Trobe University and in regional Victoria.

Nicholas Tolhurst has been a choral singer from boyhood, beginning at St Paul’s Cathedral Choir in Melbourne. He has studied piano and voice, and fuelled his passion for choral music through long associations with Astra Chamber Choir, Ensemble Gombert, St John’s Lutheran Southgate Bach Chorus and, recently, as lead bass with Toorak Uniting Church Choir. He is a skilled choral conductor, and particularly enjoys composing special pieces for his choirs.

We hope you enjoy this Steinway on Stage.
