Steinway on Stage is a series of intimate twilight concerts which feature Wangaratta’s magnificent Steinway Grand Piano. Audiences are gathered around it on the stage of the Alpine MDF Theatre. This program has been a partnership between Wangaratta Arts Council Inc. and Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre since 2010.
Mark has been a frequent and highly regarded presenter of Steinway on Stage recitals, collaborating with a variety of musicians from Wangaratta and across the state, including saxophonist Stephen O’Connell. Mark has been playing in duos and bands since age seventeen. His current band, since moving to Wangaratta in 2014, is the quartet Miles High which plays for diverse audiences across the North East. Its drummer, Paul Hogan, along with Paris Zachariou and Alistair Robertson joined Mark for a concert to bring performance back to WPACC in 2021. Mark has undertaken Jazz Studies at the ANU in Canberra and includes jazz pianists Tord Gustafsen, Keith Jarrett, Tony Gould and Dave Grusin as influences.
Stephen has been a committed professional musician and composer for over 35 years and is highly active as a touring musician and recording artist. He has written many pieces of music in response to the amazing environment of the Central Australian Outback; and has recently written the multi-arts show Illara. Stephen has performed his own compositions as featured soloist with full symphony orchestras in Australia and overseas. He has recorded over 50 albums with various artists and three solo albums. In 2017 Stephen was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts.
